A new terrace house in St John’s Wood, London replaces a group of modern flats, which failed to match the high quality of the surrounding properties. Located in one of the capital’s most desirable residential areas, the new houses are a reflection of the existing historic villas, composed as a unified terrace to reinstate the original mass, scale and detailing of the street. A white stucco villa contains two family houses, emphasised by a three-storey central bay with rusticated surround and pediment, with two smaller brick wings set back on either side. Each wing contains a five bedroom house with external decoration expressing the internal status of each room. Permission for the houses was won in a landmark appeal decision where the design was judged to be of outstanding quality and the equal of the nearby listed buildings.
