A masterplan and detailed design of 200 homes on the edge of the market town of Tenterden in Kent. The town has a strong character defined by the High Street, with its broad range of architectural styles and materials and close links with the surrounding countryside. The tower of St Mildred’s church is a prominent landmark in the centre of the town. The project involved the layout of new streets, lanes and green open spaces that respond to the historic pattern of the town, frame views of the church tower and mitigate the visual impact of several large buildings on the southern side of Tenterden constructed in recent years including a large supermarket and a leisure centre. The proposals were developed through a series of public design workshops and were guided by the residents of Tenterden who wanted a development that would reflect local character. The new homes are a mixture of different sizes and types to reflect the variety found elsewhere in the town. There is a predominant use of local materials including weatherboarding, red brick and hanging tiles.
